Religion and Scientific Naturalism: Overcoming the Conflicts (Suny Series in Constructive Postmodern Thought)
Published in Hardcover by State Univ of New York Pr (September, 2000)
Author: David Ray Griffin
Average review score:

In search of evolutionary naturalism
Although I would not share as such the perspective of this book, it is a very useful and provocative exploration of many issues current evolutionary theory, as it collides with religion, cannot deal with, because its assumptions of naturalism simply eliminate the problem rather than solving it. Darwinists are often charged thus with naturalistic preconceptions, then judged by a very narrow standard on this score, and we end with miraculous explanations for punctuated equilibrium, and other nonsense. This work by taking a far broader tack stands in the line of a greater tradition of naturalism, that reminds one of the 'evolutionary naturalism' of W. Sellars, and indeed the work summons the philosopher Whitehead to this debate, from which he has been exiled. The author, for example (and this is only a part of the argument) quite audaciously brings in the issue of parapsychology, although this is and will remain problematical. Every culture of man, with the possible exception of various subcultures of the Indian yogic traditions, has been totally confused on this point, and the final confusion is the positivist attempt to declare there is no such subject. It is not surprising that science should take this approach, but the result instantly vitiates the very basis of theory, for the subject has been amputated. However, it is never promising to pursue this area lightly, and it would seem dubious to make it a basis for a new spiritual evolutionism, if the antiquated yet sound traditions of the Buddhist variety always had better sense in their emphasis, not on the marginal parapsychology, but self-consciousness itself. The book generates a kind of constructive dialectical sparring and evokes a side of modernism we forget, from the lost hermetic traditions, to the pantheism, panentheism, and such of many from Leibnitz to Hegel, whose explorations have succumbed to idealist cliches, blinding us to the degenerated condition of the current spectrum of thought. Such issues have traditionally shown little promise however and would not easily resolve the religion-science dilemmas if we consider the great theosophical deviations they would generate. The turtling down of current positivistic evolutionism is a measure of self-defense.

The author's delineation of the types of naturalism with a subscripted terminology, e.g. naturalism-sam and naturalism-ns, and darwinism-1 to darwinism-8, etc,... is clarifying and useful. The retreat to a form of naturalism-ns (no supernatural)is very acute, and would probably relieve the current concealed metaphysics in the Darwinist enterprise, whose flaws the author analyzes at great length. Very provocative book, whatever one's views of its affirmations.

A wake-up call.
The first book I read of David Ray Driffin's was "Parapsychology, Philosophy, and Spirituality: A Postmodern Exploration". That book was a real eye-opening treat. I later purchased his "Unsnarling the World-Knot: Consciousness, Freedom, and the Mind-Body Problem. Also a terrific text. Now he has continued in his pan-experientialist process mode of thought and brought out this wonderful book. Even though I sound entirely in love with his material, I'm not. It's very good and there is much to agree with, but I'm not convinced that theology (or parapsychology) has to give up the term supernatural. In any case, Griffin's books are intelligent and informative, this one is also no exception. Another, excellent recent text that may interest readers is by Huston Smith and its called "Why Religion Matters". Check them all out.

Give it up!
Through his book, Mr. Griffin has helped me answer one of the big questions that has bothered me since my undergraduate years in Electrical Engineering - how to resolve my sense of mystery in the world around me with my understanding and appreciation of the scientific method of inquiry. In a nutshell, the answer is that both Science and Religion have to give up some long held beliefs and dogmatic statements of "fact." Put succinctly;

"Belief in the supernatural causes problems for religion it can not solve, and supernaturalism makes religion incompatible with science. For both reasons, religion needs to give it up."

"Belief in materialism causes problems for science it can not solve, and materialism makes science incompatible with religion. For both reasons, science needs to give it up."

In addition to the views on resolution of this de facto conflict between religion and science, Mr. Griffin's book has shed a considerable amount of light on my meager understanding of Alfred North Whitehead's writings around what I refer to as Process Theology. It has encouraged me to study further my own philosophy and theology and to explore how it fits with my understanding of the material world. As a technologist, it seems imperative for me to clearly understand this issue if for no other reason than to have a sound basis for ethical conduct in our increasingly technology dependent society. So to that end, this book is must reading for all of us, since we will all have to make ethical decisions about advancement in technology from creation of "spiritual machines," to genetic manipulation.

Revival's Golden Key: Unlocking the Door to Revival

A Must Read Book
This book is so important for Christians to read, that I have purchased two cases of them to give out.

As a church pastor who reads constantly, I would rate this as one of the best books I have read in a long time. Although the title speaks of revival, to me it really speaks more to evangelism and day to day living. Revival nuggets are there, and if that is what you are looking for, read it.

The bottom line is, I recommend this book to the point I would call it a must read. It isn't a 5 star book, it is a 10 star!

An Awesome Book!!
If you found it difficult to witness because you don't know how, read this book. It has opened my eyes to the biblical technique that is effective in true repentance. It may even bring you to a better knowledge of your salvation. You will not be disappointed that you read it. I gave one to a friend and he loved it. If we all do our part in sharing the Good News the right way we can truly have a Revival!

Schaum's Outline of Intermediate Algebra
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Trade (01 April, 1997)
Authors: Ray Steege and Kerry Bailey
Average review score:

Great Study book
Best math-problem book I have come accross. The book does all different types of problems, and works them out step by step. Highly reccomended.

Good study guide
This book was a great study guide to use when I took Intermediate Algebra last term. I used it a lot with homework assignments because it broke down problems into simpler terms. If you are looking for a good stusy guide, I reccommend this one.

Great Explanations
As a college math instructor, I bought this book to see if would be useful for students who struggle with math. I was completely impressed with the layout of this study guide! The Intermediate Algebra text by Schaum's explains every concept clearly and carefully, from basic solving of linear equations to graphing of lines and simplifying rational expressions. Many texts at this level do not bother to explain all the little things as thoroughly as this one does, but that is EXACTLY what a struggling student needs to see. It also provides several worked-out examples and practice problems in every section. If you are having trouble with Intermediate Algebra, this may be all the "tutoring" you'll need!

Second Chance: Biblical Principals of Divorce and Remarriage
Published in Paperback by Dominion Pr (July, 1998)
Author: Ray Sutton
Average review score:

God's truth applied to divorce and remarriage.
I've read several books on the subject of divorce and remarriage, but this one was the most enlightening. It was taken straight from the Word of God and addressed many areas that I had not seen addressed before. It was a very great encouragement to me (being the innocent party going through an adulterous divorce.) It assured me that I had done things God's way so far and gave me hope that I am free to enter a second marriage with God's blessing. I highly recommend it to any Christian who wants to be obedient to God's Word while dealing with divorce.

excellent work, straight from the Word!
I read this book some years ago, loaned it out and never recieved it back. An excellent work, that provides insight and balance concerning this issue as I have never seen before, a must read for any christian dealing with this critical issue of divorce and remarriage.

I read this book six years ago and it gave me hope.
It has been six years since I read this book but its impact remains to this day. As a Christian I had always had a very narrow definition of "grounds for divorce". When my husband of 10 years let me know he wanted a divorce I was devastated. How could I do this? What about remarriage? Was I destined for singleness as a result of this? I read this book with thoughtfulness, prayer and an anguished soul. By the time I was finished I had peace, confidence and hope. Reading this book enabled me to see marriage as a covenant and divorce as the breaking of a covenant. This book does not offer a quick fix or easy answers for someone who wants to get out of a marriage but seriously looks at what constitutes the breaking of a marriage covenant and what the Bible has to say about divorce and remarriage. I highly recommend it to anyone searching for a Biblical perspective on divorce and remarriage. Thank you Ray Sutton and Gary North.

Shadows in the Sea : The Sharks, Skates and Rays
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (November, 1996)
Author: Thomas B. Allen
Average review score:

Fun, Rare information covered,
I read this book after years of interest in the Ocean and all things therein. I had thought I read most of the published accounts of the more well-known incidents, especially here in teh U.S. This book taught me so much more was available. This is the best coverage of the New Jersey shark attacks (with photos) just now being covered in greater detail in 2 newly published books. It covers the story of an old shark fisherman, an evolution of our study of sharks and of attacks and biological data. One of the best.

shadows in the sea
this is one of the most informative and fascinating books i have ever read. i have used it for giving speeches and for teaching. the illustrations are very interesting along with the other art works included. i must own close to a thousand books , but this is one of the very few which i read over and over.

The most accurate shark book on the market
Well, what can i say? i LOVE this book. From the first pages, an account of the "rogue shark" off New Jersey in 1916, this book is informative, exciting, and sometimes even endearing...stories of shark fisherman, attacks, and a comprehensive guide to sharks commonly found in North American oceans, i have never read a shark book that is so full of information...READ THIS BOOK!

Great book, even better photos!
This is a super book with loads of great stories and wonderful photographs! A must own for any skiier.

Photographic history of the early days of skiing in the West
Ray Atkeson was the premier skiing photographer in the 30's - 50's. Through his beautiful photographs you'll enjoy seeing the early days of skiing in the Pacific Northwest, Utah, Colorado and California. It's remarkable not only for the photographs, but for the camera equipment Ray had to use to capture these scenes. See the ski areas, equipment and clothing from this early area. This is a terrific coffee table pictorial of a bygone skiing days.

Great coffee-table book.
First saw this book in the Denver, CO airport. What a great book. If you like skiing you will enjoy the photos in this book - particularly if you frequent any of the resorts featured in the photos (most of which are in the western US - WA, CO, UT, CA). Like most any ski related item associated with Warren Miller - awesome!

Sorcerer Hunters #5
Published in Paperback by Tokyopop (01 August, 2001)
Authors: Satoru Akahori, Ray Omishi, Anita Sengupta, and Satoru Akahori

I can never get enough.......
I just love Sorcerer Hunters. I have never seen the Animè version, but I hope it's as great as the manga novel. It's extremely funny, but can also be very serious. It does contain some nudity, so it isn't for little kiddies. There are also a few things that were left untold in the books, that made me a little confused, but they don't pertain to anything that would make a big difference. I really love this series :)

Volume 5...
The Sorcerer Hunters Series, which totals 13 books in all, is a very well-written fantasy/humor/adventure. It isn't your average Japanese Manga... I learned that after reading the first volume.
I highly recommend this book, but only if you have read at least one of the other books before this. Up to book 4, it was short stories (at most 3 chapters long), and mainly for character development. The 4th book introduces a major story line as well, so it gives you more to think about.

------------------------
The story continues with the Sorcerer Hunters' hunt for the Platina Stones. The main story takes us from a mysterious mansion surronded by Zechlova(sp?) trees, to a little shack in the snow. Here, we learn more about Tira and Chocloat's past, and get our first glimpses of Apricot Glase (Carrot and Marron's mother). Her personality adds a nice touch to the mood, because we begin to see why the main characters act the way they do.

This book is wonderful, and very serious on occasions. Don't worry, though. There are two stories strictly for humor between the two serious ones. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I do.

This is the sweetest!!!
This has got to be one of the best mangas ever! In this book you would almost think that Chocolat and Carrot would get together.......Marron is sooooooooo cute

Sometimes Love comes and it goes
Carrot is all worried about being the reincarnation of the god of destruction and how it will affect his friends, including the babes!! Later Carrot, Marron and Tira get trapped inside a maze.
Can Carrot survive those nasty emergency rations? Who is Crepe? and why the heck is she telling Carrot they are lovers? Plus, Tira teams up with the bad guy?! This is a cool Sorcerer Hunters book cause well, you'll just have to see what I mean on page 164.
^_^

It just keeps getting better...
This is my all-time favorite manga series, and with each new volume, the stories just keep getting better and better. This volume increases character development, especially in Carrot.

Anyway, onto the actual stories. The first one is about Carrot coping with the fact that he is the God of Destruction. Marron is worried about him as well. This story is short compared to most chapters of SH.
The second story, magic carpender, is all one big shot (Instead of it being split up into several chapters, like most extended stories, it is a 150 page chapter). The Sorcerer Hunters go back to work disposing of Evil Sorcerers, but this time it isn't just a Sorcerer they need to face. This has to be one of my favorite stories, and I could read it over and over. It made me cry... *snif*

If you never read the series, I highly suggest you start at the first book and go from there. You won't regret it, SH is an awesome story.

The Best Yet!!
I know you didn't think it was possible. Niether did I, until now. Carrot is accualy SENSITIVE in the latest SH book. It's amazing, I know. If you have read the other SH books, or if you're just a random anime-freak, this one is a must-buy.

Specious Science: How Genetics and Evolution Reveal Why Medical Research on Animals Harms Humans
Published in Hardcover by Continuum Pub Group (May, 2002)
Authors: Jean Swingle, Dvm Greek and C. Ray, MD Greek
Average review score:

Another ground-breaker!! But can you handle the truth?
Dr. Greek has again put forth the most powerful, insightful, and rational reference work in the scope of human health issues. What entities control the way you approach disease and illness, its treatments, and the prevention of it? Here you will find overwhelmingly documented sources and information on how we can finally equip ourselves to understand why Americans have one of the world's worst health records while simultaneously spending more than any other country on 'treatment'. Where is so much of our money being wasted and whom is pocketing the rest? Can you really handle the truth? You can allocate many, many years researching and trying to uncover the answers on your own and still come up far short, or you can save several tens of thousands of dollars and invest less than [price] in an advanced compilation of documentation, which is written, by the way, in lay person's terms. Your co-workers or friends will never return this book to you if you lend it out though---it is that good, I'll attest to this, as I am on my third copy.

Specious Science exposes animal model's fundamental flaws
Finally, an antidote to the incessant and self-serving claims of the animal research industry!

Specious Science excels in at least three areas. First, it's a great primer in the fundamental tenets of sound science. Second, it shows how animal-modelled research fails to meet these basic requirements in theory and in practice. Third, it explains how human-focused medical research, which competes with animal experiments for funding, is superior in its scientific rigor, relevancy, and predictive value.

How many times have we heard that a mouse is the "best" model for studying human disease? One look at a mouse should make you skeptical. The Greeks probe deeper and investigate significant differences between humans and animals at the cellular, sub-cellular, and molecular levels - the arenas in which both the agents of and treatments for disease operate. They explain how small interspecies differences in genetic layout lead to substantial divergences in responses among species. In other words, Evolution 101! The animal model, no matter how strenuous or creatively its proponents argue otherwise, fails this lesson.

"Best animal model" is a fairly meaningless term. Extrapolating from one species to another is fated to be inexact and misleading. Our "hit rate" for medical discoveries is higher in every other type of scientifically-grounded medical research, and for this reason, as the book points out, money squandered on the crude and antiquated animal model harms humans.

Specious Science should be required reading for any life science major, or anyone interested in how charities and the Federal Government spends their health research dollars.

Crystal Therapy, Pyramid Power and Faith Healing.
Those with a vested interest frequently claim that biomedical research using animals is a necessary evil. Specious Science demonstrates that those who make such claims have wandered from the fact-based rationality that drives real science.

The Greeks use current knowledge of genetics and evolution to explain why animal-modeled science should be viewed with the same skepticism that most educated people view crystal therapy, pyramid power, and faith healing.

Once they have presented a theory for why members of other animal species are not productive models of human disease, the Greeks go on to examine the evidence and demonstrate that their theory is sound. Using the history of medical advancement as their test bed, the authors look at the record and debunk the claims we have all heard about animal research being the source of all cures - claims made by the vested interests that turn out to be spin-doctoring and myth.

With much scholarship and research, the Greeks have uncovered the roots and behind-the-scenes stories of the discoveries that have changed medicine through time into a science. They explain the lost chances and delays that a faith in the animal model has repeatedly caused. They expose the fatal catastrophes that have resulted when scientists have chosen to value animal data over human, and they have explained the surprising histories of the medical miracles that have arisen from doctors trying to help human patients.

The book also points out recent breakthroughs and advances in medicine that are stemming from human biology, genetics, epidemiology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. We learn that computers are screening chemicals at astonishing rates and predicting their efficacy and toxicity as drugs at a rate and degree of accuracy that will embarrass everyone with a stake in the archaic practice of animal experimentation.

Together, Specious Science and their earlier work, Sacred Cows and Golden Geese, present a cogent and compelling argument that explains why animal experiments continue and why they continue to retard real medicine progress and result in continued human suffering.

Anyone wishing to understand the science of medicine and the debate surrounding the theory of animal models will find this book essential reading.
