In search of evolutionary naturalism
A wake-up call.
Give it up!"Belief in the supernatural causes problems for religion it can not solve, and supernaturalism makes religion incompatible with science. For both reasons, religion needs to give it up."
"Belief in materialism causes problems for science it can not solve, and materialism makes science incompatible with religion. For both reasons, science needs to give it up."
In addition to the views on resolution of this de facto conflict between religion and science, Mr. Griffin's book has shed a considerable amount of light on my meager understanding of Alfred North Whitehead's writings around what I refer to as Process Theology. It has encouraged me to study further my own philosophy and theology and to explore how it fits with my understanding of the material world. As a technologist, it seems imperative for me to clearly understand this issue if for no other reason than to have a sound basis for ethical conduct in our increasingly technology dependent society. So to that end, this book is must reading for all of us, since we will all have to make ethical decisions about advancement in technology from creation of "spiritual machines," to genetic manipulation.

A Must Read BookAs a church pastor who reads constantly, I would rate this as one of the best books I have read in a long time. Although the title speaks of revival, to me it really speaks more to evangelism and day to day living. Revival nuggets are there, and if that is what you are looking for, read it.
The bottom line is, I recommend this book to the point I would call it a must read. It isn't a 5 star book, it is a 10 star!
An Awesome Book!!

I can never get enough.......
Volume 5...I highly recommend this book, but only if you have read at least one of the other books before this. Up to book 4, it was short stories (at most 3 chapters long), and mainly for character development. The 4th book introduces a major story line as well, so it gives you more to think about.
------------------------
The story continues with the Sorcerer Hunters' hunt for the Platina Stones. The main story takes us from a mysterious mansion surronded by Zechlova(sp?) trees, to a little shack in the snow. Here, we learn more about Tira and Chocloat's past, and get our first glimpses of Apricot Glase (Carrot and Marron's mother). Her personality adds a nice touch to the mood, because we begin to see why the main characters act the way they do.
This book is wonderful, and very serious on occasions. Don't worry, though. There are two stories strictly for humor between the two serious ones. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I do.
This is the sweetest!!!

Sometimes Love comes and it goesCan Carrot survive those nasty emergency rations? Who is Crepe? and why the heck is she telling Carrot they are lovers? Plus, Tira teams up with the bad guy?! This is a cool Sorcerer Hunters book cause well, you'll just have to see what I mean on page 164.
^_^
It just keeps getting better...Anyway, onto the actual stories. The first one is about Carrot coping with the fact that he is the God of Destruction. Marron is worried about him as well. This story is short compared to most chapters of SH.
The second story, magic carpender, is all one big shot (Instead of it being split up into several chapters, like most extended stories, it is a 150 page chapter). The Sorcerer Hunters go back to work disposing of Evil Sorcerers, but this time it isn't just a Sorcerer they need to face. This has to be one of my favorite stories, and I could read it over and over. It made me cry... *snif*
If you never read the series, I highly suggest you start at the first book and go from there. You won't regret it, SH is an awesome story.
The Best Yet!!TTYL

Another ground-breaker!! But can you handle the truth?
Specious Science exposes animal model's fundamental flawsSpecious Science excels in at least three areas. First, it's a great primer in the fundamental tenets of sound science. Second, it shows how animal-modelled research fails to meet these basic requirements in theory and in practice. Third, it explains how human-focused medical research, which competes with animal experiments for funding, is superior in its scientific rigor, relevancy, and predictive value.
How many times have we heard that a mouse is the "best" model for studying human disease? One look at a mouse should make you skeptical. The Greeks probe deeper and investigate significant differences between humans and animals at the cellular, sub-cellular, and molecular levels - the arenas in which both the agents of and treatments for disease operate. They explain how small interspecies differences in genetic layout lead to substantial divergences in responses among species. In other words, Evolution 101! The animal model, no matter how strenuous or creatively its proponents argue otherwise, fails this lesson.
"Best animal model" is a fairly meaningless term. Extrapolating from one species to another is fated to be inexact and misleading. Our "hit rate" for medical discoveries is higher in every other type of scientifically-grounded medical research, and for this reason, as the book points out, money squandered on the crude and antiquated animal model harms humans.
Specious Science should be required reading for any life science major, or anyone interested in how charities and the Federal Government spends their health research dollars.
Crystal Therapy, Pyramid Power and Faith Healing. The Greeks use current knowledge of genetics and evolution to explain why animal-modeled science should be viewed with the same skepticism that most educated people view crystal therapy, pyramid power, and faith healing.
Once they have presented a theory for why members of other animal species are not productive models of human disease, the Greeks go on to examine the evidence and demonstrate that their theory is sound. Using the history of medical advancement as their test bed, the authors look at the record and debunk the claims we have all heard about animal research being the source of all cures - claims made by the vested interests that turn out to be spin-doctoring and myth.
With much scholarship and research, the Greeks have uncovered the roots and behind-the-scenes stories of the discoveries that have changed medicine through time into a science. They explain the lost chances and delays that a faith in the animal model has repeatedly caused. They expose the fatal catastrophes that have resulted when scientists have chosen to value animal data over human, and they have explained the surprising histories of the medical miracles that have arisen from doctors trying to help human patients.
The book also points out recent breakthroughs and advances in medicine that are stemming from human biology, genetics, epidemiology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. We learn that computers are screening chemicals at astonishing rates and predicting their efficacy and toxicity as drugs at a rate and degree of accuracy that will embarrass everyone with a stake in the archaic practice of animal experimentation.
Together, Specious Science and their earlier work, Sacred Cows and Golden Geese, present a cogent and compelling argument that explains why animal experiments continue and why they continue to retard real medicine progress and result in continued human suffering.
Anyone wishing to understand the science of medicine and the debate surrounding the theory of animal models will find this book essential reading.

Give This One A Ride
The author's delineation of the types of naturalism with a subscripted terminology, e.g. naturalism-sam and naturalism-ns, and darwinism-1 to darwinism-8, etc,... is clarifying and useful. The retreat to a form of naturalism-ns (no supernatural)is very acute, and would probably relieve the current concealed metaphysics in the Darwinist enterprise, whose flaws the author analyzes at great length. Very provocative book, whatever one's views of its affirmations.
